What I’ve been up to recently
There’s an old adage that I remember Leo McGarry saying in an early episode of The West Wing – “Two things you don’t want people to see how you make them, laws and sausages”.
At the risk of showing you the photography sausage being made, this page is a collection of recent shots, regardless of genre or style. It’s a way for you to see what I’ve been doing and whether you like the general cut of my photography gib.
So don’t expect a fully polished set of images here, but that’s kind of the point. We learn by doing, by trying stuff, and wrapping the things we think have worked into our portfolio and call it our “style”.
To Wed or not to Wed
This question comes up every year. Should i start photographing weddings? I haven’t thus far because I’ve been specialising on more constructed images that can be re-taken if they’re not quite right…and that doesn’t really work in the middle of a wedding ceremony. There is a bit of a difference between creative test shoots, like these shots, and the real thing.
But the more I do some other kinds of photography, the better I get at the “unique moment” style of storytelling that befits a wedding.
I would definitely be more of a reportage (ninja with a camera) than a “group shot say cheese” kind of guy. I honestly don’t know what is the prevailing style at the moment. I got married 16 years ago so I’m no help to myself in that regard.
Until recently I also didn’t really have the appropriate camera/lens combo for weddings. But I do now!

Go-go gadget Gobo
One of my newest toys is a lens projector gobo. Basically it’s an actual camera lens that sits in front of a studio light. You can “focus” the light, including through shapes (called gobos) that you put in between the light and the lens. This was a many and varied shoot that enabled me to play around with this lighting technique.
Needs more practice of course!
