About

Hi, I’m Jeff

You’ve found me.

I’m that guy that’s quite creative and quite technical and has to work at both. I’m quite forgetful so I make lots of lists. I’ve got a list of lists. I’m from Sussex but have lived in a few different places. I try my best to be as authentic and in-the-moment as possible. I like film but I never ever want to photograph with film again. I like puppets and whimzy.

I can remember what it was like to not have a mobile phone and yearn for that time. I dislike social media quite intensely.

I’m married to a woman who is immeasurably superior to me.

I love looking forward to what could come next but struggle sometimes to let go of what’s gone before.

I’m influenced by many things and like to make sure they’re not worn on my work like a badge because I’m too paranoid about being called a copycat. My brain is 62% fuzzy whirlwind and 62% laser focus. I’m bad at maths.

For better or worse, I am Jeff

“About” pages are funny things aren’t they? Trying to show what you’re like without showing what you’re really like. I’m bad at this.

I got into photography and video making because it felt like a good cross between the technical and the creative. That is exactly how I’d describe it on a practical level. You want to create art, something beautiful, something that looks amazing, so in order to do that you have to learn how to functionally make it happen. And there’s always something to learn, new techniques, new kit. So you have to keep expanding yourself. That’s something I enjoy.

But actually, it turns out, the thing I really enjoy is getting to know my clients and trying to understand how they want to be shown towards others. The projection of myself is authenticity, but each client is different. There’s many a nuance and expectation in creating imagery that represents how human being look, and how people feel about themselves.

That’s the gig. That’s the juice. That’s the sauce.

If I can make something that people instantly recognise as themselves, and they feel great about it, I’ve won. And who knows, they might pay me to have done it!

A non-exhaustive run down of me

It’s not a CV. Ask me more about anything and I’ll tell you. I am an open book.

Child

Allowed to watch movies with age ratings far beyond my actual, my entire childhood is a popular culture reference.

1st career ended before begun

Joined the film industry only to realise everyone hated each other and was miserable. Didn’t want to end up that way so walked away, dreams in tatters.

Teen

I went to a sixth form college different to the standard to get away from “school plus”. I was an indie kid and the birth of Brit pop was deeply ingrained in my record collection.

Teaching

Spent 5 years as an A-level teacher. Baffling everyone that thought they knew that I wouldn’t be able to stand up in front of teenagers and project authority. Ofsted said I was Excellent, but what do they know?

University

Awkward balance of technical and creative course. Always slightly on the fringe of every friendship group. Learned to burrow my own hole, plant my own seeds, forge my own path, over-using analogies throughout.

Man with Camera

Eventually, using a camera to tell stories felt like it fitted and I went solo.

Like what you see?

If you’ve actually read all this, seen what I do and think we might be a good fit to work together, for the love of chocolate covered marzipan get in contact with me.
